Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 7: Supernatural

This one’s an extremely long one, friends. Supernatural (SPN) went for fifteen glorious seasons! There is SO MUCH.

Logliney Stuff:
Two brothers. Saving people. Hunting things. They start out with monsters and end up fighting, well, God. It’s a thing.

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 6: Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender is decidedly a kids’ show (it never leaves a snot joke untold), but it’s also a pretty stunning portrayal of generational trauma. The show starts in the 100th year of a war. One hundred years. Then we have a world that seems fully Asian (REPRESENT), some gorgeous fight choreography, and a main cast of tiny worldbreakers. ATLA is a song unto my soul.

Logliney Stuff:
For every generation there is an Avatar, master all four elements. Aang, an Air Nomad and the current Avatar, is barely, barely on the edge of puberty, when he gets caught in a storm and cryo-preserved (think Captain America) for one hundred years. When Katara and Sokka, two teens from the Southern Water Tribe, happen to wake Aang up, shit has gone down. The Fire Nation has spent the past hundred years attacking, conquering, and colonizing as much of the rest of the world as it could, and there was no Avatar to slow them down. Now it’s time for Aang to grow up, master his powers, and save the world.

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 5: Jane the Virgin

There are not a lot of shows that I would say that 95% of its episodes were well done, but here we are. (I really, really, really hated one storyline in the last season, but more on that later. Jane the Virgin consistently hit things out of the park. The cast is uniformly excellent, the music is lovely, and sometimes things get absolutely bonkers.

I love it.

Logliney Stuff:
A young woman is accidentally impregnated and decides to have the baby. The owner of the, um, stuff turns out to be a guy she had a crush on! But she is in a serious relationship! Also telenovel shenanigans! Also Gilmore Girls except these protags are Latina and lower middle class!

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 4: Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

At the beginning of the pandemic shut-in, I signed up for a bunch of those 30-day trials from streaming channels. One of them was Acorn, and I figured I’d try watching the #MissFisher show I vaguely remembered some friends raving about. And then I watched it every day for about four months.

Logliney Stuff:
It’s the Roaring Twenties and the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher, monied adventurer and avowed single lady, takes up work as a private detective in her hometown of Melbourne. Along with the clever and motley crew of her household, she flirtily solves crimes alongside Detective Inspector Jack Robinson.

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 3: Criminal Minds

I was going to do #TheCrown next, but since it has a season or two left to go, I figured an analysis right now would be premature. So #CriminalMinds it is!

Logliney Stuff:
The Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI uses psychological theory to identify and outmaneuver murderers, most often focusing on serial and spree killers. While half of the team swaps in and out fairly frequently, fifteen seasons means the core cast has some serious narrative heft when sweeps time comes around.

What’s Up With That:
Sometimes you just need pretty people to play uber-competent puzzle-solvers who also are dead shots and good at roundhouse kicks. Also, if you need to run to the bathroom, it’s totally fine if you don’t hit pause, because you probably won’t miss anything you can’t guess beforehand.

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 2: Justified

This one’s a bit of an outlier, since I only watched and fell in love with #Justified in the past year. But it’s a pretty recent rewatch, so I figured I’d get this written while the memories are pretty fresh.

Fandoms I Have Loved, Part 1: The West Wing

After doing so many dozens of movie posts over the past few months, I started feeling weird that I haven’t really talked with many folks about the TV shows I’ve been tirelessly binging in the background. I’ve also been dipping once in a while into the fics I used to write, and WOW I have consumed a lot of media.

Anyway, I thought it might be neat to do these once in a while--particularly the ones I’ve recently binged. If they’ve eaten my brain for weeks at a time, I should probably give them some sort of tangible due diligence. So I’ll start off with the shows I’ve watched in their entirety in 2020 thus far: #TheWestWing, #Justified, #TheCrown, #CriminalMinds, #MissFishersMurderMysteries, #AvatarTheLastAirbender, #TheLegendOfKorra. Once I’ve moved from that, I’ll probably go back and forth with old fandoms and shows I’ve recently been digging. We’ll see how this goes. (I also want to vaguely note there are book series, comics, and games that I could babble about, but we’ll see if I want to expand into those other media. Plus the movie fandoms, if I want to double up on the review posts. I only have so much time, after all.)
