Book Review: The Midnight Work by Kassandra Sims
Left of center, but perfectly on target.
The Midnight Work, by Kassandra Sims, isn't a book for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. It's violent, sometimes morbid, and surprisingly quirky. I began reading the book, expecting a "normal" paranormal romance, and it took me a couple of chapters before I became immersed in the story.
I did, however, become immersed in it, and a lot of my fascination had to do with the protagonist. Her viewpoint, even after her death, is something I could sympathize with, and her dialogue with the other characters is informal and absolutely realistic. Even her relationship with Olivier, in its alternating passion and ambivalence, is something that rang true with me.
The book overall is three steps outside of what I usually read, but it encapsulates a complete and alternate universe. I would definitely read other books by this author.
