Movie Moments XIII: May 2018

Nine for May!

Final Portrait, 12 May 2018, Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema
I'm discovering it's easier for me to appreciate Armie Hammer's acting in period pieces. The closer we come to the present day, the less I'm able to see past his particular brand of handsome. Also, apparently I have nothing to say about this movie. Eh.

All the Money in the World, 14 May 2018, DVD via Redbox
I know we all know this already, but Michelle Williams is astonishing. Plummer does well in the role, also--I imagine Spacey would have brought more hostility to the role, but putting all the external factors aside, I really like Plummer’s gruff subtlety. (Pretty much any decent actor could have done Wahlberg’s role, honestly.) And whoever was in charge of the score likes to drink Chianti while listening to opera on vinyl, I bet.

Outbreak, 14 May 2018, DVD via public library
I love me some epidemiological fiction, y’all. Also, this movie is intensely 1995 in ways I wouldn’t have been able to articulate beforehand. ALSO, more than twenty years later, this still feels like a cautionary tale, egads.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower, 15 May 2018, DVD via Redbox
Studio Ghibli’s work is always so dreamlike, and while this isn't by them, it's one step away. This is Wicked via Miyazaki, starring Hermione Granger, and it’s pretty cool.

Contagion, 16 May 2018, DVD via public library
Seriously, human beings would be completely doomed if something virulent went airborne. Also, I really really want to read some nonfiction about disease vectors.

Disobedience, 19 May 2018, Riverdale 10 VIP Cinema
#Disobedience, on one hand, is a somewhat complex exploration of growing up within and then away from a Jewish community of faith. (I wonder how the rending of clothing, early on, reads to folks unfamiliar.) On the other hand, #Disobedience also features Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz making out a lot.

So, basically, I was always going to dig this movie.

Breaking In, 20 May 2018, Hot Springs VIP Cinema
#BreakingIn is about a woman going mama bear during a home invasion. We know that because the "criminal mastermind" tells us four times. (You know what would have made this movie only 15 minutes long? If the “criminal mastermind” had asked where the safe was when Gabrielle Union was still in “I’ll tell you whatever you want, just let my kids go” mode. Sigh.) Anyway, I dig Gabrielle Union and support her choices.

CRIMINAL. "MASTERMIND."

Deadpool 2, 20 May 2018, AMC Classic Central City 10
Shatterstar had it comin'. Domino was as amazing as I expected, and it was nice to see Neg after I killed her in some fanfiction a few months ago.

Anyway, this movie was a basket o’ wonderful surprises for comics readers. (I totally jumped in my seat when a particular character appeared, EVEN THOUGH one of his buddies was hanging around and I should have made the connect.) This sequel was almost exactly what I wanted, and thank goodness.

Game Night, 31 May 2018, DVD via Redbox
I look forward to comparing this movie to that movie about dudes playing tag. Also, it must be FASCINATING to read through scripts with Rachel McAdams and Kyle Chandler.
