2020 Emmy Nominations (most of them)

Hey, the 2020 Emmys are on Sunday! I have a few opinions, though honestly, I have not watched very many of these shows. AH WELL. (It's easy to commit to watching all the movies for the Oscars. Emmys, not so much.) I skipped a bunch of categories because I had nothing to say, but nevertheless, many, many embeds shall follow.

Outstanding Comedy Series
Have Not Watched: Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dead to Me, Insecure, Schitt's Creek, The Kominsky Method, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, What We Do in the Shadows
Have Watched: The Good Place

Let's be clear, I'm pretty sure I'd be rooting for #TheGoodPlace no matter what.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Have Not Watched Ever, I Think: Ramy Youssef
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Don Cheadle, Eugene Levy, Michael Douglas
Have Watched: Anthony Anderson, Ted Danson

Both Anderson and Danson are spectacular in their roles, but it's hard not to give it to Danson because, well. #TheGoodPlace.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Rachel Brosnahan
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Christina Applegate, Linda Cardellini, Issa Rae, Catherine O'Hara
Have Watched: Tracee Ellis Ross

That makes this vote easy! But Ross is awesome.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Daniel Levy
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Mahershala Ali, Alan Arkin, Sterling K Brown, Tony Shaloub
Have Watched: Andre Braugher, Kenan Thompson, William Jackson Harper

Oh man. I'm leaning towards Andre Braugher, just because Holt is so Holt. That said, isn't it fascinating to see Ali and Brown up against each other?

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Yvonne Orji, Annie Murphy, Marin Hinkle
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Alex Borstein
Have Watched: Betty Gilpin, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, D'Arcy Carden

D'ARCY CARDEN.

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Fred Willard, Dev Patel, Eddie Murphy, Brad Pitt, Luke Kirby
Have Watched: Adam Driver

My existentential struggle about how I feel about Adam Driver continues, but this actually would have been a simple choice, even if I'd seen all the others.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Angela Bassett, Maya Rudolph (SNL), Wanda Sykes, Bette Midler
Have Watched: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Maya Rudolph (The Good Place)

Oof. Waller-Bridge's SNL was GREAT, but Maya Rudolph as the Judge was pretty *chef's kiss.*

Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series:
Have Not Watched: Modern Family, Ramy, Schitt's Creek, The Great, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel (x2), Will & Grace
Have Watched: n/a

Well. I have zero opinions in this category, I guess.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series:
Have Not Watched: Schitt's Creek (x2), The Great, What We Do in the Shadows (x3)
Have Watched: The Good Place (Whenever You're Ready)

THIS SHOW. GUYS.

Outstanding Drama Series
Have Not Watched: Better Call Saul, Ozark, Succession, The Handmaid's Tale
Watched Previously, but Not This Season: Killing Eve, Stranger Things
Have Watched: The Crown, The Mandalorian

BABY. YODA. CLAP. CLAP. CLAP CLAP CLAP.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Billy Porter (though I know he is great), Jeremy Strong
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Jason Bateman, Brian Cox, Sterling K Brown
Have Watched: Steve Carell

Steve Carell's Mitch Kessler on #TheMorningShow makes my skin crawl, which I suppose means Carell's doing his job.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Zendaya, Laura Linney
Have Watched: Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Olivia Colman, Jennifer Aniston

To be fair, I haven't watched the most recent season of #KillingEve, so for me, this category falls between Colman and Aniston. And, you guys, I gotta give it to Aniston. (Content warning for discussion of assault.)

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Nicholas Braun
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Giancarlo Esposito, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfayden, Bradley Whitford, Jeffrey Wright
Have Watched: Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass

Duplass is good in his role, but Crudup is DELIGHTFUL.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Julia Garner, Sarah Snook
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Fiona Shaw, Samira Wiley, Thandie Newton
Have Watched: Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Helena Bonham Carter

Meryl Streep is great in #BigLittleLies, but Laura Dern is my fave. Carter is basically doing her Carter thing.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Andrew Scott, James Cromwell, Jason Bateman, Ron Cephas Jones
Have Watched: Giancarlo Esposito, Martin Short

Martin Short's bit on #TheMorningShow will live forever in my nightmares. Esposito was good in #TheMandalorian, but I'm not convinced he did anything particularly remarkable. He was pretty damn fun, though.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Harriet Walter
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Cherry Jones, Alexis Bledel, Phylicia Rashad
Have Watched: Cicely Tyson, Laverne Cox

So even though I have seen Tyson and Cox in their shows in those roles, I have not watched either in this season, so I am abstaining here.

Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series:
Have Not Watched: Homeland, Ozark (x2), Succession (x2)
Have Watched: The Crown (Aberfan), The Crown (Cri de Couer), The Morning Show (The Interview)

"Aberfan" was stunning, my friends.

Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special
Have Not Watched: Little Fires Everywhere, Normal People, Unorthodox
Have Watched: Watchmen (It's Summer and We're Running Out of Ice), Watchmen (Little Fear of Lightning), Watchmen (This Extraordinary Being)

Oof. It's hard to beat "This Extraordinary Being." (CW for hate crimes.)

Outstanding Directing For A Variety Series:
Have Not Watched: A Black Lady Sketch Show, Saturday Night Live, They Ready
Have Watched: Last Week Tonight, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Directing in These Our Troubled Times must be a trip, but I remember being really impressed with how they did the Fauci episode of #TheDailyShow.

Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes:
Have Not Watched: The Handmaid's Tale, Westworld
Have Watched: Carnival Row, The Mandalorian, Watchmen

THIS IS HARD.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Jeremy Pope, Paul Mescal
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Hugh Jackman, Mark Ruffalo
Have Watched: Jeremy Irons

Jeremy Irons had so much fun as Ozymandias, guys. SO much.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie:
They Reside Not in My Memory: Shira Haas
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Kerry Washington, Cate Blanchett, Octavia Spender
Have Watched: Angela Bassett

Man oh man.

Outstanding Main Title Design:
Have Not Seen: Godfather of Harlem, The Politician, Westworld
Have Seen: Abstract: The Art of Design, Carnival Row, The Morning Show, Watchmen

Here's the thing: I don't know if #TheMorningShow has the BEST title design, but I always watched the entire thing, thinking, I just don't understand you.

Outstanding Limited Series:
Have Not Seen: Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs America, Unbelievable, Unorthodox
Have Seen: Watchmen

That was easy, but also, easy choice in any case.

Outstanding Music Composition For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special (Original Dramatic Score)
Have Not Heard: Hollywood, Little Fires Everywhere, Mrs America, Unorthodox
Have Heard: Watchmen (It's Summer and We're Running Out of Time)

Outstanding Music Composition For A Series (Original Dramatic Score)
Have Not Heard: Euphoria, Ozark, Succession
Have Heard: The Crown (Aberfan), The Mandalorian (Chapter 8: Redemption)

Giving this one to Mando.

Have Not Watched: Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones, Dave Chappelle (Kennedy Center)
Have Watched: Last Week Tonight (Eat Shit Bob), Last Week Tonight (The Journey of ChiiJohn), The Daily Show (Trevor's Audience Tribute Song)

All three of those segments are outstanding and I cannot choose a favorite.

Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program (Half-Hour)
Have Not Seen: Glow, Space Force, What We Do in the Shadows, Will & Grace
Have Seen: The Mandalorian (Chapter 1)

I mean.

Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series:
Have Not Watched: Better Call Saul: Employee Training, Most Dangerous Game, Reno 911!
Have Watched: Star Trek: Short Treks, The Good Place Presents: The Selection

#ShortTreks has such breadth, y'all.

Outstanding Short Form Animated Program:
Have Not Watched: Robot Chicken, Steven Universe Future
Have Watched: Forky Asks a Question (What is Love)

WAIT. Robot Chicken is still going? But anyway, the Forky Asks a Question series is amaaaaaazing.

Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series:
Have Not Watched: Ozark (x2), Stranger Things, Succession (x2)
Have Watched: The Mandalorian (Chapter 2), The Mandalorian (Chapter 4), The Mandalorian (Chapter 8)

Outstanding Special Visual Effects
Have Not Watched: Stranger Things, Westworld
Have Watched: Lost in Space (Ninety-Seven), The Mandalorian (Chapter 2), Watchmen (See How They Fly)

Ooooooh. I'd give this one to #TheMandolorian, though, because that fight in the mud was gorgeously done.

Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Comedy Series Or Variety Program:
Have Not Watched: Ballers, Henry Danger, Shameless, Space Force
Have Watched: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Outstanding Stunt Coordination For A Drama Series, Limited Series Or Movie:
Have Not Watched This Season: SWAT, Stranger Things, The Blacklist, The Rookie
Have Watched: The Mandalorian

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Jim Parsons, Dylan McDermott, Titus Burgess
Have Watched: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jovan Adepo, Louis Gossett Jr

This is tough, but I was somehow most impressed with Abdul-Mateen.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie:
They Reside Not in My Memory: n/a
Have Watched Elsewhere, but Not in Their Designated Show: Holland Taylor, Margo Martindale, Tracey Ullman, Uzo Aduba, Toni Collette
Have Watched: Jean Smart

Dang, the cast for #MrsAmerica was STACKED. But Jean Smart, y'all.

Outstanding Variety Talk Series:
Have Not Watched: n/a
Have Watched: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Late Show with Steven Colbert

So, like, Oliver is probably going to win this, but #TheDailyShow just does not get enough credit for its excellence.

Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series:
Have Not Watched: Better Call Saul (x2), Ozark (x3), Succession
Have Watched: The Crown (Aberfan)

1) I repeat, "Aberfan" was outstanding.
2) It's possible I just dislike prestige drama, y'all.

Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series:
Have Not Watched: n/a
Have Watched: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Last Week Tonight, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

SETH. SETH. SETH. "A Closer Look" is a MARVEL.

Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special:
Have Not Seen: Dave Chappelle: Sticks and Stones, John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch, Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything
Have Seen: Hannah Gadsby: Douglas, Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby

Why haven't I watched Mulaney or Oswalt yet? I dig them. The Meyers special was lovely, but I saw Gadsby's "Douglas" live and I can't even, y'all.

Outstanding Writing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special:
Have Not Watched: Mrs America, Normal People, Unbelievable, Unorthodox
